The Bajau — Sea Gypsies
Visiting takes a paddle. The Bajau "neighbor" lives beyond the wall — beyond the wave. To chat, you first jump in a canoe and paddle over; if they're far, you paddle and shout, and if shouting fails, you keep paddling. Social life in the floating village runs on oars. They know the boat, not the face. Can't tell who's who? Normal. The Bajau don't always rely on faces — they know boats. Every vessel has a name and its own painted pattern. Spot the red stripe on a hull from afar, and you know: "Ah, that's old Karim's house." The toy is a boat; the playground is the sea. While city children play with blocks, Bajau children carve their own wooden planks into tiny canoes at three or four years old, wobbling out to sea. Their first "vehicle" floats. The waves are the lullaby. Babies don't sleep in cribs; they sleep in cabins that sway with the tide. The rougher the sea, the gentler the rocking — and the sounder the sleep. Landlocked cradles don't rock enough. The elders read the waves better than any forecast. Stand at the shore, close your eyes, listen — the village elder can tell you "Rain the day after tomorrow; don't go far." Where there's no phone signal, experience is on full bars. Straight from the water to the coals. Out at dawn, back before noon. A small stove at the stern, fish still flapping from the water, salted and on the grill. The freshest meal in Semporna isn't in a restaurant — it's on a swaying boat deck. The prize for a diving contest is a bigger fish. Bajau youths compete in breath-holds and depth dives. No trophies for the winner — just an extra fish at dinner. The meaning of effort, made tangible. A whole village can move house. Where the fish shoals go, the stilts follow. Some floating villages drift with the monsoon — east today, west when the rains come. No property deeds out here, only the right of the sea. Sea urchin as a snack. When the tide retreats, flip the rocks, crack an urchin open and sip it straight, like city folk cracking sunflower seeds. Fresh enough to raise your eyebrows — and no queue. Shells once served as money. The older generation did trade without banknotes — bartering catch for coconut, coconut for shell. Currency may lose value; a lobster just pulled from the water never does.
Land Below the Wind
Semporna lies in Sabah, known as "The Land Below the Wind." Sitting on the southern edge of the typhoon belt, shielded by the Philippines and Borneo, no typhoon has crossed these waters in a century — the wind passes above, never touching down. The name travelled the world through American author Agnes Newton Keith's book of the same title. For MEILI's guests, it is also a state of mind: the sea always still, the weather always mild — the wind far away, serenity at your feet.

Passports and Visas
All international travelers arriving in Sabah, Malaysia, must hold a passport valid for at least six months, along with a valid Malaysian visa or visa-free/visa-on-arrival entry permit. Entry policies may change over time, so please consult the relevant authorities regarding the latest requirements before your departure.
Flights and Transfers
Guests are required to book their own flights to Tawau Airport (TWU). Upon arrival in Tawau, a 70-minute drive will take you to Semporna Pier. From there, we will arrange a private speedboat to carry you across the crystal-blue waters for about 45 minutes to our overwater resort. For safety reasons, speedboat transfers may be restricted at night; late arrivals may require an overnight stay in Semporna town before transferring to the island the following morning.
Climate and Attire
Located near the equator, Semporna enjoys a warm, sun-drenched climate year-round. We recommend packing light and comfortable summer clothing, non-slip shoes for the speedboat deck, and ample sun protection. To preserve our fragile coral reef ecosystem and protect turtles and marine life, we kindly request that you bring and use only reef-safe sunscreen.
